10 Stimulating Outdoor Summer Activities For Kids

Make this summer one of the best yet with some fantastic outdoor summer activities for kids. You can keep your children motivated and stimulated during the school break with some outdoor summer activities at home that are sure to get them excited – as well as keep them active and healthy!

So what are good summer activities for kids? Well, that depends on your child’s preferences and what they like to do best, but you’re bound to find something that appeals to them in the list below. Rather than sitting inside watching TV or playing on their phone, get your children out and about, enjoying the fresh air.

Without further ado, here are our top 10 suggestions for fun summer activities for kids at home.

Outdoor Summer Activities For Kids

1. Outdoor Game Night
Outdoor game nights are a great way to get the whole family outside to enjoy the summer evenings. Whether you go for a classic board game, a card game, or even something more active like hide-and-seek, you’re bound to have a blast. If you are someone who believes the motto of “the more, the merrier,” consider inviting over the neighbors or some of your kids’ friends, and let the outdoor summer games begin!

2. Outdoor Band
What can you play outside in summer? Aside from games, there is something else that works brilliantly when played outdoors: musical instruments! If your child is musical, why not get them to serenade you outside as you eat in the evening? Or get them to put on a private garden concert with some of their friends. Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon.

3. Spot Some Local Birds
Bird watching is a fantastic activity for kids. With a variety of birds present in the warmer months, it’s a perfect time of year to set out on a birdwatching adventure! Do a little research prior to setting off, so you know what to look for – check out the sounds made by different local birds, and their unique identifying features such as feather color and size. You can even print out a small guide beforehand and take this with you to make it easier.

This is also a good activity to promote mindfulness, by encouraging your children to focus on the smaller details around them.

4. Build A Bird Feeder
Would you prefer your kids to do some birdwatching from the comfort of your own home? In that case, why not build a bird feeder? Not only will this bring beautiful local birds right to your doorstep, but will be fun to make as well! Plus, it’ll save you some money to make your own bird feeders rather than buying them.

You can find simple instructions for putting together your own bird feeder online – check out this one, for example. Then, all that’s left to do is sit out and enjoy the birds that flock to your garden!

5. Create An Obstacle Course
Get active and build a fun obstacle course for your children in your own yard. It doesn’t really matter what materials you use for this, as long as they’re safe and get the kids hopping, skipping, jumping, crawling…whatever you please! If you want to take this up a notch, you could do the same thing but for bicycles – a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

6. Get Creative With Sidewalk Chalk
How do I keep my kids outside in the summer? One simple way is by giving them an artistic project. With some sidewalk chalk and a bare patch of ground, your children are capable of creating a masterpiece. Even better, it washes off easily, so no tears if they make a mistake and need to start over! Make it a collaborative project by inviting their friends to join in.

7. Play Mini Golf
Either check out your local mini golf range or create your own at home. You can buy children’s golf sets online with all the necessary equipment to set up your own mini course and putt in your backyard, but you could also attempt to design and execute one yourself with a bit of creativity. This could be one of the most fun outdoor summer activities at home for all the family to participate in!

8. Plant Flowers and Herbs
Children love being involved in the garden, so let them help you plant some flowers outside. If you have limited space, you could make a small, compact herb garden instead – either way, getting their hands dirty can be a very stimulating activity, and gardening skills are useful for their future, too.

9. Have A Car Wash Day
What are good outdoor activities for kids? Of course, the best outdoor activities for kids are those they enjoy the most – but isn’t it a bonus when they help you with something, too? Washing your car may seem like an annoying chore to you, but to your children, it may present an opportunity to splash around and have some fun! Plus, they’ll love seeing the sparkling-clean result of their hard work.

10. Have A Treasure Hunt
Finally, how about having a fun treasure hunt in your backyard or in the local park? Give your children the first clue and set them to work – we recommend keeping it to ten clues or less to make sure your kids stay focused throughout. In the end, reward them with some treasure (or candy!).
